Examples of bacteria

The bacterium is a prokaryotic microorganism (it does not have a nucleus) that is found in many parts of the planet Earth as it is essential for life as it forms part of the biological cycles, being capable of putting an end to the destruction of the forest surface and collaborating in food production. It should be noted that some live inside other organisms (endosymbionts) such as the bacterial flora, which helps digest food.

It should also be noted that some bacteria harm health by being infectious, so they reproduce rapidly within the body and can cause diseases such as salmonella, tuberculosis, gonorrhea, leprosy and typhoid fever.

Escherichia coli

Escherichia coli is a Gram -negative bacterium commonly found in the digestive tract of humans and warm-blooded animals. Many of the variants cause virtually no symptoms, but Escherichia coli O157:H7 is capable of causing abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae

The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a Gram-negative diplococcus that, as its name suggests, causes gonorrhea. This is a sexually transmitted infection that can be contracted by contact with the mouth, throat, eyes, vagina, urethra, penis, or anus. In addition, it infects both men and women. so it can cause infections in the genitals, rectum and throat.

Bacillus anthracis

Bacillus anthracis belongs to the Gram-positive Bacillaceae family and is found mostly in the soil and in harmless metabolism. It can also produce a zoonosis and is classified into 3 types:

  • Cutaneous (skin) anthrax.
  • Pulmonary (lung).
  • Digestive (stomach and intestine).

Clostridium botulinum

Clostridium botulinum is a species of Gram-positive anaerobic bacillus that generates very resistant spores and a neurotoxin (neurologically harmful exogenous chemical). This causes a rare but serious illness known as botulism, which can be caused by injuries or by eating poorly canned food.

Examples of cocci-type bacteria

The coconut is a bacterium that has a spherical shape and is characterized by the production of diseases accompanied by pus or fumes.

  • Streptococcus pyogenes (tonsillitis).
  • Haemophilus influenzae  (flu).
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumonia).
  • Neisseria meningitidi  (meningitis).
  • Streptococcus mutans (caries).
  • Staphylococcus aureus  (osteomyelitis).

Examples of Spirillum-type bacteria

Spirillum is a Gram-negative bacterium with a helix (more rigid) or corkscrew (more flexible) shape, and is considered one of the easiest to recognize under the light microscope.

  • Treponema pallidum  (syphilis).
  • Borrelia  (infections in humans and other animals).
  • Leptospira  (leptospirosis or Weill’s jaundice).

Examples of bacillus-type bacteria

The bacillus is a rod-shaped bacterium, and can be in many taxonomic groups.

Some of them are described as pathogenic microorganisms , while others do no harm at all.

Those that cause diseases:

  • Vibrio cholerae  (cholera).

Those that are part of the bacterial flora:

  • Casey.
  • Acidophilus.
  • Bifidus
